A well earned point - player ratings from yesterday's draw with Manchester United

Last updated : 14 December 2008 By Gareth Davies

A point and another clean sheet were two of a wealth of positives to take from yesterday evening's hard fought draw with Manchester United. Despite the driving rain fans left White Hart Lane with anything but dampened spirits.

The match itself was by no means a classic, hindered as it was by a frustratingly pedantic performance from referee Mike Dean and wasteful passing from both sides. But emerging from the quagmire were genuine signs of the progress the club has made since Harry Redknapp's arrival.

Player ratings

Heurelho Gomes - 8: The Brazilian goalkeeper has looked a man transformed since his momentous error at Craven Cottage. Last night he dealt with every corner confidently, and pulled off a smart save from a rasping Ji Sung Park shot. Better still, he stretched every sinew in his body to force Ryan Giggs' late free-kick onto the bar. On this form Redknapp may think he can reallocate some of the money he was going to spend on replacing the Brazillian to strengthening elsewhere.

Vedran Corluka - 8:
Another classy performance from the Croatian, who is rapidly looking like one of Ramos' most astute purchases. The way he switched to centre-back without so much as batting an eyelid during a confident display will give heart to fans who will no doubt be wondering how we will cope without Woodgate and King.

Michael Dawson - 9
: A performance the evoked memories of Dawson's first ever appearance in a Spurs shirt against Liverpool. Called upon at a late stage, the former Forest man was a mountain, dealing with everything Berbatov and Tevez had to throw at him. His no nonsense style may well be key to continuing our good form over the festive period, and his tackle which robbed Berbatov as the Bulgarian turncoat looked primed to score will live long in the memory. (SpursMad Man of the Match)

Jonathan Woodgate - n/a:
Fans will be praying for a quick return for one of our most consistent performers this season, and would have been forgiven for fearing the worst after he limped off with a back injury after ten minutes.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto - 7:
Comedy hairstyle aside, the Cameroon left back barely put a foot wrong, and has made the position his own since Harry took over. Got pulled out of position by Tevez once in the first half but that was the only blot on an otherwise impressive outing.

David Bentley - 6:
Yet another frustratingly poor display from the expensive winger. Gave the ball away cheaply in good positions time and time again and was wasteful from almost all his set-pieces. Saved from the ignominy of a five - or less - by a free-kick and a snap shot that forced saves from Van der Sar. Not lacking in effort but his attainment has been well below par all season.

Didier Zokora - 7:
Another whose performances have genuinely improved under Redknapp. He showed once again that his versatility is an asset to the club after comfortably reverting to right back following the loss of Woodgate. Perhaps could have been a bit quicker to cut off some under hit passes but dealt with Ronaldo impressively.

Jermaine Jenas - 6
: Quiet night for Jenas who contributed little before tearing a muscle in the second half. He now faces a sustained period on the sidelines, which might not be too great a loss. Destined to be one of the most frustrating players ever to have worn the shirt.

Tom Huddlestone - 7:
Solid performance in the screening role for the substitute who appears, along with Darren Bent, to have lost the support of Redknapp over the last few weeks. With Jenas' injury he may well be relied upon and needs to be a more consistent performer if he is to establish himself in first eleven. Might have scored were it not for Pavlyuchenko's inadvertent block.

Aaron Lennon - 7:
A mixed night for the in form winger, who looked out most dangerous player but is not as effective playing on the left. Produced moments of real quality but then drifted out of the game. Harry should revert to giving him priority on the right and look to bring in a left footed winger (how many times have we said that?)

Luka Modric - 7:
Another who had an inconsistent evening. At times he looked the most likely to score, at others he was wasteful in possession. Definitely improving since the beginning of the season but needs someone with a bit more guile than Roman as a foil.

Roman Pavlyuchenko - 5:
A desperately disappointing evening for the Russian, who looked back to his oafish, lead footed worst. Beginning to worry that his poor performances indicate a lack of quality rather than fatigue, and I wouldn't be surprised if Redknapp is eyeing up a replacement in January. However, if had little to feed on all night and looked completely isolated at times. Definitely works better with someone else to work off of.

Jamie O'Hara - 6:
A neat cameo from the hardworking midfielder, who may get a more prominent role over the next few weeks.

Darren Bent - 5:
As with Roman, he was given no service and made no impact on the game.
