CSKA v Spurs talking points- time for Vincent Janssen to stand up and be counted

Spurs lost their opening match in Group E against Monaco but arrive in Russia in good form after registering three consecutive victories in the Premier League.

Here we look at five talking points ahead of the fixture.

SECURITY FEARS LOOM

This will be the first time an English club has played in Russia since violence erupted among fans of the two countries at Euro 2016

A repeat of the ugly scenes in Marseille is not expected, particularly given only around 250 Tottenham supporters have travelled, but Spurs have issued instructions to try to prevent any further trouble

Their fans have been advised not to show team colours, flags or banners until inside the stadium.

SPURS UNDER PRESSURE

On the pitch, Mauricio Pochettino's men have some catching up to do after a disappointing opening loss at home to Monaco at Wembley

CSKA's draw against Leverkusen was the best result possible to minimise the damage of Tottenham's defeat but taking a point in Russia would appear the minimum requirement, or Spurs may have a mountain to climb to get out of this group.

DIER AND DEMBELE ABSENTEES

Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele have both been left at home as they recover from hamstring injuries, with their absence a considerable blow to Tottenham's solidity in midfield

Who Pochettino replaces them with will offer a significant clue as to how bold he is prepared to be

Victor Wanyama is the obvious choice to come in but alongside him Pochettino must decide whether to pull back the attacking Dele Alli or throw 20-year-old Harry Winks, a more defensive option, in at the deep end.

TIME FOR JANSSEN TO DELIVER

Vincent Janssen is yet to get off the mark in open play for Spurs, his only goal so far coming from the penalty spot against Gillingham last week, but the Dutchman has shown strength in his link-up play and willingness to chase and harry off the ball

Those qualities could prove invaluable if Tottenham are to play more cautiously away from home here but they will also need their front man to take his chances when they come along.

COOL HEADS KEY

Pochettino criticised his players after their performance against Monaco for lacking aggression and passion, but they were also naive and over-eager to attack when perhaps a more patient strategy would have paid dividends

Tottenham will be eager to answer accusations they lack experience at this level, particularly given the likes of Janssen, Ben Davies and Winks could all play on Tuesday

Winning frantic matches in the Premier League is one thing but Spurs must now prove they can navigate more tactical tests in Europe too.
