Dele Alli Hopes to Avoid FA Ban By Arguing That Offensive Video Was Supposed to Be 'Private'

Dele Alli is hoping to avoid severe sanctions from the Football Association by pointing out that the video he took mocking the coronavirus outbreak was intended to remain in a private group chat.

The 23-year-old was hit with a charge from the FA on Wednesday for an 'aggravated breach' of Rule E3 in relation to race, colour, ethnic origin or nationality.

In the clip - which was sent to some friends on Snapchat and then leaked to a national newspaper - Alli zoomed in on a man of Asian descent while joking that "this virus gunna have to be quicker than that to catch me."

He is not the first player to fall foul of the FA's social media guidelines this season. Manchester City's Bernardo Silva received a £50,000 fine and was banned for one match for a Twitter post about teammate Benjamin Mendy.

According to the Evening Standard, the Spurs midfielder hopes to highlight the differences between this case and his own in order to avoid a similar punishment. It is understood Alli will request a personal hearing to plead his case.

He is likely to point out that unlike Silva's post - which was shared with his followers - his video was only intended to be viewed by a select group of his friends.

In the ruling on the City player's misconduct, the FA stated that the forward's punishment had been severe as it "was not a private communication between two friends [but a] post...on a social media platform exposed to the 600,000 followers," which seems to support Alli's defence.

Unlike Silva as well - who complained of not being able to joke with friends 'these days' after the incident - the Spurs playmaker apologised immediately, putting on record how he regretted his actions.

José Mourinho will be desperate for Alli to avoid a fine as his attacking options have already been severely depleted by injuries to
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
