Does Gareth Bale need to take a leaf out of Ronaldos book

On the other hand, if he wants to enhance his reputation as a team player who can help put his employers on the trophy map, maybe he should think twice about jumping on the gravy boat to Madrid.

Ronaldo, it has to be said, has enhanced his personal pedigree by breaking goalscoring records galore ? his achievement of scoring 146 goals in 135 appearances for Real is nothing short of staggering ? but team accolades have been few and far between during his four years at the Bernabeu.

FIFA World Player of the Year and Golden Shoe awards are amazing honours to have on your CV, but what does Ronaldo have to show in terms of club triumphs?

One La Liga title and couple of domestic cup successes are not the return he would have expected when he left Manchester United in a world record ?80m transfer to Real in June, 2009.

Yes, of course, all the riches that go with being one of the biggest players on the planet have come his way, but personal rewards are not the be all and end all. Ronaldo has virtually admitted as much and reading through the lines of some of his comments he regrets leaving United when he did. Hence his desire for a return to the scene of his greatest club triumphs.

And thereby lies a message for Tottenham talisman Gareth as he contemplates his future after Spurs? failure to make the Champions League grade this season.

Real Madrid have made their interest known and ?100m transfer and a ?name your price? salary are all very tempting, but I happen to think Bale will be better off served spending one more year at White Hart Lane...at least.

There have been suggestions he will commit for another season to help Spurs get to the next level. If, in 12 months time, the North London club are no further on in their development then that would be the time to move on to pastures new. But not now.

Spurs?fans will have been heartened somewhat by recent Bale comments that he still has unfinished business at White Hart Lane...

Comments like: ?It?s disappointing, but we will pick ourselves up again...we will just have to regroup this season and give it another go...it's something we have to learn from. We are a young squad, and we will take it in to the future?.

Note the continued reference to the word WE. It seems his heart is still at White Hart Lane and that?s where we all hoping he will be plying his immaculate trade next season.
