Ex-Spurs Star Claims Jan Vertonghen Is 'Not Enjoying' Positional Change Under Jose Mourinho

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has suggested that defender Jan Vertonghen is unhappy with his current role under new boss Jose Mourinho.

The Belgian has been used as a left-back during five games under Mourinho, with the other two seeing him feature as a centre-half in a back three.

However, Robinson - who made 175 appearances for Spurs between 2004 and 2008 - claims it is obvious that Vertonghen isn't comfortable as a full-back, also stating that Spurs have a big issue when it comes to that area of the pitch.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson said: "I think he started with three at the back because of the full-back situation. The full-backs have been a problem all season.

"Vertonghen now, as he’s getting older he’s not enjoying playing left-back, you can see he’s not enjoying playing left-back.

"Vertonghen’s not the answer at left-back long term.

Spurs' latest draw at Carrow Road has once again raised concerns about their defensive frailties, with full-back in particular a position under immense scrutiny.

With Ben Davies currently injured, Danny Rose out of favour and Serge Aurier in questionable form, Mourinho has a real issue in defence, hence why Vertonghen has been forced into a wide position.

The 32-year-old has had a difficult campaign, initially being frozen out of the team by Mauricio Pochettino, before picking up an injury shortly after his return to the starting lineup. Meanwhile, talks surrounding his future - with his contract expiring in summer - may only be exacerbating things.

Vertonghen has been long linked with a move away from north London, something that may become increasingly likely if he is played out of position.

Mourinho is believed to be in the hunt for defensive reinforcements in January, despite Toby Alderweireld having recently signed a contract extension. Ryan Sessegnon has been preferred at left wing-back in Tottenham's last two matches, however, Mourinho is looking for greater experience and depth in the full-back positions.
