Harry Kane- Tottenhams end to the season left a bad taste

Picking up the Premier League Golden Boot was scant consolation for Kane who described the 5-1 capitulation to the already-relegated Magpies as "probably the worst team performance I've ever been involved with."

However Kane, who was named in Roy Hodgson's provisional squad for Euro 2016 on Monday, said Spurs' poor finish should not be allowed to overshadow what has generally been an impressive campaign at White Hart Lane.

Kane told Spurs TV: "We've had a fantastic season but the last four weeks haven't been good enough

It's going to be hard for the fans but the bigger picture is we are going to be playing Champions League football next season.

"It's nice to win it (the Golden Boot) but obviously it would have been better to win it in better circumstances

We feel like we've failed and it will leave a bad taste over the summer but at the start of the season we'd have taken it."

Spurs went into the game needing a point to effectively confirm finishing above north London rivals Arsenal for the first time since 1995 - but their shattering loss coupled with the Gunners' stroll against Aston Villa cost them dear.

But there was more positive news for the club on Monday as Kane was joined in the provisional England squad by team-mates Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier and Danny Rose.

Kane tweeted:"Delighted to be in the @England squad

Looking forward to meeting up with the boys

#threelions".
