Man City on Verge of Signing Benfica's Rúben Dias

Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Benfica centre-back Rúben Dias, who is expected to cost close to around £55m.

Pep Guardiola has been keen to add another new defender to his squad before the end of the transfer window on 5 October, while City have already made enquires for Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly and Sevilla's Jules Koundé.

Koundé was expected to be the chosen one, but the Portuguese media has exploded with claims that City have now settled on Dias. It was first reported by Porto Canal, who state that a deal has been struck which will see Nicolás Otamendi move in the opposite direction.

O Jogo get in on the fun as well, adding that the cost of the deal is expected to sit between £55m and £60m, although whether that value includes Otamendi is unclear.

Regardless of that, Dias appears set to become City's second centre-back signing of the summer, following Nathan Aké in sealing a £40m move to the Etihad Stadium. If the deal goes through, the pair will compete with each other for a spot alongside Aymeric Laporte in City's back line.

Guardiola was unimpressed with City's centre-back options last season and rarely hesitated to bench Otamendi and John Stones in favour of moving midfielder Fernandinho into defence, while young Eric García also moved up in the pecking order towards the end of last season.

With García heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, Guardiola made it clear that at least two new defenders needed to be signed. He looks to have settled on Dias, who is also on Tottenham Hotspur's radar this summer.

A move for Dias has paved the way for a return to Portugal for Otamendi, who spent four years on the books with Porto between 2010 and 2014.

Otamendi has managed 210 appearances during his five years with City, but after struggling for regular game time last season, it always seemed likely that his time at the Etihad would be coming to an end this summer.
