Mauricio Pochettino 'considering' shock return to Tottenham

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with a surprise return to former club Tottenham Hotspur, who are desperately searching for a new long-term manager this summer.

A popular figure at the club, Pochettino was sacked in November 2019 and replaced by Jose Mourinho, whose job to finally win Spurs a trophy ended in April after taking Spurs in the wrong direction.

Pochettino spent a while out of work before returning to management with PSG in January, but after failing to win the Ligue 1 title, The Sun claim Pochettino is contemplating a shock return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Argentine is said to have told friends that he would be open to a return to Spurs if the opportunity came up, while chairman Daniel Levy has also confessed to those close to him that sacking Pochettino was the biggest mistake of his career.

Pochettino turned Spurs into genuine title contenders but complained that a lack of financial backing from Levy prevented them from taking the final step towards silverware, and the pair's relationship eventually soured to the point that Pochettino was dismissed.

However, it seems as though Levy regrets his actions and sees Pochettino as the perfect long-term manager for his project - particularly as he may be the only man who could convince striker Harry Kane to stay.

Kane has voiced his desire to leave in search of trophies this summer, but Levy has made it clear he does not want to sell and instead hopes Kane will agree to wait and see what a new manager could do to the club.

There is some hope that Kane could be swayed by Pochettino, who helped turn the Englishman into one of the game's most feared strikers.

There has yet to be any contact between Spurs and Pochettino, but if this story is to be believed, it seems as though it wouldn't be hard to find an agreement.

Pochettino still has one year on his contract in Paris, so Spurs would have to pay a compensation fee to bring the boss back, but the short nature of his deal means that sum may not be too scary.
