Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham: Player ratings as Willock strike sees Spurs slip up in top-four hunt

Tottenham conceded a late equaliser to slip to a 2-2 draw with Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, missing the chance to leapfrog Chelsea and climb into the Champions League qualification spots.

The Magpies started the game brightly and Dwight Gayle should have put the hosts ahead but his double effort was saved superbly by Hugo Lloris. The Frenchman could not deny Joelinton from close range however, as Newcastle capitalised on some terrible defending to take a shock lead.

That advantage lasted only one minute as Harry Kane profited from some equally slack defending to tap home an equaliser. The England captain completed the turnaround four minutes later, hammering into the far corner from just inside the box.

Spurs pushed to kill the game in the second half and Miguel Almiron had to be alert to head Japhet Tanganga's effort off the line. Newcastle created several clear-cut chances, but Joelinton could only poke wide from inside the six-yard box.

Kane had the opportunity to wrap up the three points on 85 minutes but he hit the post, and the Magpies punished the visitors, with substitute and on loan Gunner Joe Willock slamming home from close range to level the scores.

Right, let's crack on with the player ratings.

NEWCASTLE UNITED RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Martin Dubravka (GK) - 6/10 - Stitched up by his defence for Kane's first strike. Beaten by the pace and accuracy of the second.

Emil Krafth (CB) - 5/10 - Did the hard bit in reading Lo Celso's pass, but misplaced his interception and allowed Kane to tap home. Shocking bit of play.

Jamaal Lascelles (CB) - 6/10 - Played in a back three with two full backs and it showed. Organisation was all over the shop, and his teammates crumbled around him.

Paul Dummett (CB) - 5/10 - Lost Kane completely for the second goal, allowing him to peel away and strike into the far corner. Booked for a needless foul on the touchline.

2. Midfielders

Jacob Murphy (RWB) - 7/10 - Whipped a delicious cross onto Gayle's head in the first half, but the forward couldn't get his effort on target. A shame. Couldn't get across quick enough to stop Kane on the line.

Jonjo Shelvey (CM) - 6/10 - Nice little clipped dink into the box to find Gayle, but he squandered both chances. Sprayed some nice passes about the pitch. Took a yellow for a foul from behind.

Sean Longstaff (CM) - 5/10 - Had a great chance to level at the end of the first half, but didn't fancy using his left foot. Probably should have risked it.

Matt Ritchie (LWB) - 7/10 - Pinged some excellent balls down the left flank for Joelinton and Gayle to chase into the channels. Solid enough. Curled in a great cross for the equaliser.

Miguel Almiron (AM) - 7/10 - Drew a few free-kicks to buy Newcastle some precious recovery time. Linked up nicely with Gayle, but couldn't get into scoring positions. Great header off the line to save his side.

3. Forwards

It all started so well | Pool/Getty Images

Joelinton (ST) - 7/10 - Made amends for an early miss with a calm finish to take the lead. Missed a sitter to equalise late on though. Redeemed himself again by keeping the equalising move alive with a smart header at the far post.

Dwight Gayle (ST) - 6/10 - How did he not score?! Forced a brilliant initial save from Lloris, but shouldn't have given the Frenchman a prayer with the second effort. You cannot miss those in a relegation battle.

4. Substitutes

Javier Manquillo (RWB) - 6/10

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Hugo Lloris (GK) - 7/10 - Pulled off an insane double save to deny Gayle, first stretching to claw away a header, and then making himself big to smother at the near post. Vital. No chance in stopping Joelinton's opener, nor the late equaliser.

Japhet Tanganga (RB) - 6/10 - Played Sanchez into trouble for Newcastle's opener with a poor attempted clipped ball. Earned a yellow card for a nasty challenge on the halfway line. Allowed the late cross to fly in and wreak havoc.

Davinson Sanchez (CB) - 5/10 -
Ugly attempted header early on, gifting the ball back to Newcastle. Repeated the feat later in the first half and didn't get away with it. Horrible passing skills - really, really bad. A bull in a china shop trying to stop Willock from equalising.

Joe Rodon (CB) - 8/10 - Produced some nice interceptions and read Joelinton's movement extremely competently. Led the backline, showing experience beyond his years as Newcastle tried to find parity.

Sergio Reguilon (LB) - 7/10 - A threat on the overlap on the left flank, and didn't face too many defensive struggles at the hands of Murphy. Put in a poor cross in the second half, when he could have killed the game with the right ball.

6. Midfielders

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (DM) - 7/10 - Lost control of the game in the opening half hour, but regained a grip once Spurs roared into the lead. Did excellently to stop Saint-Maximin in full flight in the second half.

Giovani Lo Celso (CM) - 6/10 - Played the ball which somehow found its way to Kane for his first. Assist with a hint of fortune. Picked up a yellow for a deliberate block on Almiron. Busy.

Tanguy Ndombele (CM) - 8/10 - Brought plenty of calm and class to the midfield when Spurs needed it most, dropping deep to collect possession and bring others into play. Drove Spurs forward for the equaliser. Beautifully weighted pass to supply Kane for his second strike. Oozes quality.

Lucas Moura (AM) - 6/10 -
Curled an in-swinging free-kick into the box which missed everyone - including the far post. Had little impact in the second half and was subbed after an hour.

7. Forwards

Harry Kane (ST) - 8/10 - Stung Dubravka's palms with a decent effort on his weaker foot. Had the simple task of tapping home from a Newcastle howler. Clinical finish for the second. Yet again, the difference-maker.

Carlos Vinicius (ST) - 6/10 -
Tucked away nicely after 24 minutes, but even he knew he'd strayed offside in the buildup. Didn't offer anything else in the first period, and was hooked at half-time. A harsh lesson.

8. Substitutes

Son Heung-min (LW) - 7/10

Erik Lamela (AM) - 6/10

Gareth Bale (RW) - N/A
