Son Heung-min Breaks Premier League Record With Last-Gasp Winner vs Aston Villa

It was a super Son-day for Spurs at Villa Park, as Son Heung-min's match-winning double made him the first Asian player to score 50 goals in the Premier League.

A topsy-turvy game saw Tottenham on the ropes for long spells in the Midlands, and Son's eighth league goal of the season had given them a 2-1 lead before Bjorn Engels struck to level things up shortly after the break.

Toby Alderweireld had earlier scored at both ends, and the spoils looked set to be shared until a horrendous error from Engels allowed Son in once more, and the South Korean had ice running through his veins as he calmly passed the ball past Pepe Reina into the bottom corner.

It was a significant goal for Spurs as it put them back into fifth place and kept the heat on Chelsea, but from an individual perspective, it was a huge landmark for the forward, who became the first player from an Asian country to hit 50 in the Premier League

Astonishingly he is now 30 ahead of the second-highest scoring Asian, as Manchester United's Ji-sung Park managed just 20 - a higher tally than any other player from the continent until Son came along and raised the bar immeasurably. Shinji Okazaki's 14 goals for Leicester put him in third.

From a Spurs perspective, it was a significant goal for reasons other than its context within their season. Hitting the back of the net with 93:34 on the clock, it was their latest league winner since 2009.

That season, Spurs finished up in fourth place, and given how things have gone for them so far this season, José Mourinho would likely bite your hand off for a repeat performance of that one.
