Son Heung-min Named Premier League Player of the Month for October

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has been named Premier League Player of the Month for October, seeing off competition from Spurs teammate Harry Kane, Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva and others.

Son scored four goals in the three Premier League games Spurs played in October, as well as getting two assists. That included a brace in the 6-1 thrashing of Manchester United at Old Trafford at the start of the month and he jointly leads the Golden Boot race.

The 28-year-old also scored the winning goal against Burnley and had a direct hand in two goals in the 3-3 London derby draw against West Ham.

It is the third time that Son has won the Premier League’s monthly award, having previously done so in September 2016 and April 2017. No Spurs player had won since Lucas Moura in August 2018.

Following a slow debut year, Son has been a key Spurs player since 2016 and has already scored double figures in all competitions in 2020/21 for the fifth season running.

There is an expectation that he will soon put pen to paper on a new long-term contract in north London that will put him among the club’s highest earners.

“Son has three years of contract, so it’s not like we’re in an extreme situation of everybody being worried. It’s more that Son loves it here, I believe that he would like to commit his future to the club for a long time,” manager Jose Mourinho said recently.

“Everybody at the club is totally in love with this player and this boy and is trying also to make him feel part of the furniture. It’s normal the club tries to go from three years to four or five or six, I don’t know. It’s normal.

“But it’s a very calm situation because Sonny has three more years of contract. But I wish [for him to get a new contract]. He deserves one. The club knows that and sooner or later, without any pressure, they will arrive into a decision.”
