Steven Bergwijn Delighted to Fulfil Childhood 'Dream' With Debut Premier League Goal

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has admitted that scoring on his Premier League debut against Manchester City was an unbelievable feeling.

The Dutchman, who sealed a switch from PSV Eindhoven late in the January window, fired home a fantastic volley midway through the second half to open the scoring, before Son Heung-min added a second to seal all three points for José Mourinho's side.

It was a fantastic start to life in England for Bergwijn, and he confessed to Sky Sports that he had been waiting for such a moment ever since he was a child.

"It's unbelievable. It’s a dream for me that’s come true, and I’m so happy to be here and score a goal for Spurs," he said.

“[It meant] everything. As a little kid you want to be here, to play in the Premier League, and if you score on your debut it’s unbelievable."

It was a fantastic performance from the 22-year-old, and that was not lost on manager Mourinho, who admitted (via football.london) that he was delighted the Dutchman could make an instant impact.

"It was a debut goal that was the icing on the cake of a very good performance. Independent of the goal I would say his performance was very good, very solid. Very mature," he said.

"We worked hard during the week. He came to us Tuesday so he had a complete week to work and to try as fast as possible to understand what we wanted from him.

"So very solid performance against such a difficult opponents like Kyle Walker, but then he was clever enough to appear also in other zones and try to create some problems for City.

"So very, very good performance. Also defensively very aware of his position, defending zonal, covering spaces. Very, very good and then of course the goal is a great goal. It's so important for us."
