Firstly do we all remember that Benteke managed to force through a move to Villa from Genk by handing in a transfer request and refusing to play? He played one season for Genk and another club came calling, he forces through a move.
A season on and the player is up to his old tricks again. This time trying to force through a move to us. You have to ask yourself whether buying him is too much of a risk? At £20million he poses a risk, what if next season he has a great season and wants to move on again? With a tag of £20milliion we could find it difficult to get more than what we paid for him.
Either way can we afford another Adebayor? A player that never seems to settle after spending 5 years at you know where. I do not want to buy someone that wants to leave after just one season. We must build a team for the future.
Chapman raised another interesting point, he believes Benteke is not actually good enough for a top 6 team. Now many people will jump up waving their arms around, but remember Andy Carroll! Benteke has had one season at Villa (albeit a very good season), but it is still only one season. Carroll came into the EPL for one season and he's bought for £35million (oh dear Liverfool). He then flopped spectacularly and he has just sealed a moved to WH. The same could be said for Benteke. In a Villa team where everything is pumped through him, pretty much the team soley relied on him. In the top teams that will not be the case, so can he succeed in a bigger team? Being in an era where Belgian football is at it's best most are likely to say yes, but beware Spurs fans he is not a loyal player and could cause a great deal of disruption in the squad. As they say be careful what wish for!
