Since 2001 the top scoring teams have finished in the top four! Ok if you want to be exact though 3 times this rule hasn't run true.
Only Man City have managed to score less than 65 goals and still entered the Champions League, which at this rate we will be lucky to achieve. As it stands Arsenal and Chelsea have scored more goals than us, Chelsea are now ahead in the table (and have + 7 goals) and should Arsenal win their game in hand they will only be 1 point behind us (they have + 4 goals)! City may have scored the same amount of goals, but they have 5 more points and a game in hand (would prefer to be in their position!).
Bale has done tremendous to score 16 goals this season, Defoe had a great start and has scored 10 goals (but none this year!). We are in desperate need of someone else chipping in with the goals! Dempsey has scored 5 goals and Lennon 4. It is easy to see where our problem is and it showed against Fulham as we failed to score for the fourth time this season!
If we fail to get into the Champions League we cannot blame it on the team we have, we can only blame it on Levy and AVB's failure to secure a third striker. Again Lopez was available!!
A small number of readers have said that it does not matter that we do not have a third striker and even said just look at Bale, but the issue is that Bale is filling the loss of goals by Ade (from last season), but who is filling in for Gareth's and Rafa’s goals from midfield? No one! We need to have two strikers that can score 15 goals a season and our wingers and central midfields must be able to score 5 plus goals a season.
We must squeeze more from JD and Ade. JD is still not looking his normal self, so I can only see him as still nursing an injury and Ade we need to support him (as our player!) and the confidence will come back!
So statistically we can see that we must score a lot more goals and although those statistics do not stand for AVB we cannot afford to ignore the past trends. Come end of season if we fail to secure fourth or above you will see that the lack of goals have failed us. The West Brom and Norwich games(at the beginning of the season) we failed to score more than 1 goal if we had of scored more that’s four points from those games alone which would bring us 1 point behind Man City. Yes it’s all could of should of and the past is the past, but failing to score against the lesser teams is not acceptable for a Champions League contender.
I am not suggesting to start throwing abuse at our players as that is counterproductive, but we must do better as fans as the heart of the team, the voice that drives them on. Come on Yid Army let’s get ready for the battle and support our troops!
