How often do high profile moves work?

Last updated : 31 May 2013 By Hoggg

We have had a fair volume of high profile (by this I mean in terms of value) transfers coming into Spurs. Out of all of these how many have actually worked?

If we look at the past say 3 let’s see. David Bentley, Luka Modric and Darren Bent. That's a 66% failure rate!

It’s all good buying these high profile players, but its whether they can perform to the same levels as to when you buy them. We all remember Rebrov, the poor man’s Shevchenko. At the time our biggest buy and likely our biggest failure. More times than I care to look back have our high profile signings failed to deliver and we have then lost a large amount of our investment (in Bentley it is set to be 100%).

The reason I bring this up is that we fail to sign the correct big names or we are failing to integrate them properly. For me it can't be the later as so many of our foreign players have made the transition well and as for those already playing in England they have no excuse for putting in such poor quality performances.

This I feel is what stops Levy from investing in certain players. We have done better by signing the reasonably priced players. VDV, Lloris, Bale, Vertonghen, not to forget the cheap ones that have turned out well Lennon, Walker and Naughton to name a few recent players.

Being Daniel Levy you have to have the clubs best interest at heart and seeing how many large profile players to come in and fail will have Levy overanalyising everything. Damiao has supposedly been looked at for 2 seasons, Moutinho for 1 season (we took too long and missed out on that one), at some point the man at the helm must decide to take a plunge or state his transfer policy for all to hear. At least then we will not have the heartache of hearing these rumours and at times being stupid enough to believe them.

As a team players want to see the big names coming in, this alone increases their confidence and produces better performances, it also has the best players seeing an ambition to match their own. If you don’t the y lose interest performances drop or they ask for a move.

So really Levy is caught in "Catch 22". Rest assured I make no excuses for the lack of signings in January (that would have secured 4th or more), but it is now when we will truly see how good a Chairman we have.

This is a pivotal season for our future. Make the wrong decisions and we could lose Bale and AVB. Make the right decision and maybe we see a top 3 finish and a trophy.

Levy has said he intends to match Bale's ambitions this season and recruit to compliment Bale and match his class with other world class players. If he fails to do this then we are doomed. We all know that high profile players will come for the money alone (look at Robinho, he didn't even realise who he'd signed for).

Money where the mouth is time. Now is when we will separate the boys from the men and have a glimpse at the future of our great club. For me I have all my trust on one man.... Levy (and believe me I hate that).
