Lennon and Townsend to start Villa game

Last updated : 18 October 2013 By Hoggg

We have yet to find the right player to put on our left wing and with Lennon's fitness coming back, would we be better off moving Townsend out to the left (being naturally left footed) to accommodate Lennon?

Thinking about it sensibly Lennon and Walker on the right and Rose and Townsend on the left would give unbelievable pace to attack the wings with. Both Lennon and Townsend are not known for their defensive duties so this is the only downfall I see. However it does then add an issue as to who would then play in the middle.

Sigurdsson had been deployed on the left and with that position filled by Andros (potentially) do we then drop Siggy? It also then depends on whether we play with a lone striker or two.

AVB seems to favour the three pronged attack so let's stick with that.

                 Soldado

Townsend               Lennon

                  Eriksen

         Dembele Paulinho

This looks balanced, however we then have the issue of keeping Chadli and Lamela happy.

Chaldi and Lamela need time to adapt to the game so for the time being this could work, however do we risk dropping an inform Siggy? It really is question time on that front.

However with Lennon doubtfully match fit yet, it is unlikely to be a big issue to start. Andros has earned his spot on the right and it is not time to rock that boat with Siggy scoring frequently on the left it is likely that AVB will stick with this.

Some will question AVB because of the West Ham game, maybe we should shake things up (which I agree with IF Lennon is actually fit). The team does need a shake up and we have great depth in midfield so it is not a great concern for us. So Siggy should make way IF Lennon is ready.

Villa away is the next game and although we beat them 4-0 (in the cup) we must also remember that it was a close game in the first half and they were without important names. Benteke may still be missing for the game and N'Zogbia is a long term absence so we may come away from Villa Park on Sunday victors, but we must play well and create our chances. Lennon and Townsend may be the best way forward with that in mind, but with Naughton likely to feature (in Rose's absence) we are better off to have someone like Siggy on the left (who does defend well when needed).

So to answer the question with a fully fit side yes you could play both on either flanks, but at the moment it’s too soon to include Lennon. Naughton poses a problem for me, he needs help in as he learns the new position.

For me looking at the game I can imagine a 2-1 win for us, Soldado will be among the scorers as he looks to cement his starting place.
