Tottenham set to land PL star!?

This has then sparked a barrage of events from other clubs, most importantly Chelsea and Southampton.

Firstly Atletico have turned down Southampton's request to make Alderweireld's loan permanent. It has been mooted that a €1.4million fee must be paid to Southampton in compensation. How does this work if Southampton still want to buy? Surely Atletico cannot turn that down, pay €1.4million and then sell him onto Southampton?

The reason I find this interesting is that surely that takes Southampton out of the running? Despite Koeman stating he would pay 18million for the defender? Is the money there for the South coast club and if so would Koeman be allowed to spend it on 1 player?

My thoughts are that it is down to Spurs now. Chelsea have no interest in signing the player as news on that front has died down completely.

I agree with what has been written though. Partnering Vertonghen at the back would improve his chances of winning a starting position (with next year’s Euro's in mind). Also he must have a starting berth, but would he get that with Jose?

With all this in mind I can only imagine that Southampton lost out once Spurs made a large offer and the player has all but signed for the club. As with Willian though, doesn't mean this deal will go ahead! We could be down to crossing the last T or dotting the last I and someone comes in and steals the player's/ agents interest at the last minute.

I would be excited to see Alderweireld join Tottenham, but it's far too early to tell, especially with the player also stating "It's down to the club", it's an easy way of saying that he is interested, but a big offer will change it all.
