Last season we cleared out a fair few players, whether fans paid attention to this I am not sure. Although some of the players may not have been considered to be good enough for the starting 11, selling them damaged our season. Roman was not the best striker that we have had at WHL, but he still scored some goals for us. Niko showed us before he left that we could have done with holding onto him and without him we had no natural sub for Bale on the left. Van Der Vaart was a first teamer and was needlessly sold.
So with that in mind I ask if we can afford to offload some of these players? Ok let's look at the likely candidates set to leave and see whether we can afford to lose them.
BAE - Although he may not go we cannot afford to have no first choice LB. Without Benni we would rely on Rose (who played well with Sunderland), but is he better than Benni?
Parker - As cover for Sandro he has proved instrumental (not as good as last season), but if we did not have him who would we have relied on?
Huddlestone - I do not think he has lived up to his potential, however his range of passing had served us well in the final matches.
Livermore - In my opinion definitely not living up to his potential and has been highly inconsistent. Could he be the youthful holding midfielder to challenge Sandro? Who knows.
These are just few of our players that we are supposedly set to sale. This will then help to supposedly fund Bale's wages etc etc. However who will come in to replace them? We suffered this season with a small squad and lacking in depth and quality depth at that. Niko and Roman would have seen us through this season better and Van Der Vaart well he would have secured us 4th without a doubt.
It’s all good having a clear-out, but we need to make sure we bring in a better level of players. A clearout is good, but we need to bring in say 2 higher quality players for every 3-4 out. We cannot just keep selling off the fringe players and weakening the depth of the squad.
Although we achieved our highest ever points in the EPL we could have done better if we kept say VDV, or Roman and Niko, or better if we had suitable replacements for them.
Either way be careful what you wish for, as always it may just happen.
