Chimbonda in talks over new deal

Rumours were rife during the summer that, after an impressive first season at the club, French defender Pascal Chimbonda wanted out of White Hart Lane, with Chelsea leading a host of clubs interested in the ex-Wigan full-back's signature. Thus with the clubs poor start to the season in mind, even the most optimistic of Tottenham fans would have been forgiven for expecting Pascal to jump on his bike and peddle as fast as he possibly could from N17. Imagine the surprise, then, that he is said to be on the verge of padlocking his bike at the training ground after committing his future to the club.

After leaving Wigan under a cloud of controversy after just one season, it's understandable that the White Hart Lane hierarchy would be nervous that Chimbonda's eyes would start to wander. Despite a shaky start to the current campaign, Pascal, who is a full French international, was a consistently solid performer last year during a season in which we struggled to keep clean sheets. Though not being as effective going forward as he showcased in his first season in England, with the absence of Ledley King, securing his future has become ever more important, especially considering how expensive an equivalently talented replacement would be. So the Tottenham board have offered him a 'bumper' new deal in hopes of tying him to the club.

The news comes from Chimbonda's agent, Willie McKay, who confirmed to Sky Sports that talks between the club and his client were underway. "We are in talks over a new deal for Pascal", adding that "Talks were going well".

McKay is hopeful that the deal will be concluded before the clubs next match against Newcastle. Tottenham fans will be hoping it's just the sort of news that will sure up a leaky back line in a increasingly important game.
