Could Luka Modric be in for a shock return to Tottenham

The Croatian left under acrimonious circumstances from White Hart Lane after forcing a transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 by refusing to play for the Lilywhites in their first 2 games before the transfer went through. However, he has found first team opportunities at the Spanish club slightly lacking, with similar players Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil keeping him out of the team on occasion. He did still manage 33 league appearances for Madrid last year, though.

Tottenham failed to fill the void left by Modric throughout last year, crying out for some creativity during home draws or defeats against Norwich, West Brom, Fulham, Stoke and Wigan. Despite the ?15m purchase of Mousa Dembele, they regularly struggled to break teams down and dropped points as a result. Although a degree of animosity is still felt towards the 27 year old from many Spurs fans, they can?t deny that his return would add another intrinsic piece to AVB?s Tottenham jigsaw.

A return to the Premier League, and more specifically Tottenham, would certainly be a shock, coming just a year after the player drove himself out of the club to seal his dream move to Spain. But if he recognises that Tottenham are an ambitious project that can offer him first team football and the chance of domestic and European success in the next few years, then Modric may be tempted to return.
