The in-form Spurs striker was shown a straight red-card by referee Phil Dowd for stamping on South African international Aaron Mokoena an hour into the 2-1 away win against his former club Portsmouth on Saturday.
Defoe will therefore have to serve a mandatory three-match suspension for his actions.
