Steve McClaren who had hoped to experiment by pairing Defoe with West Ham striker Dean Ashton, said: "I had intended to start Dean but he suffered an (ankle) injury halfway through the session which really clouded the morning. Jermain has always impressed me"
Defoe netted six times for Tottenham in pre-season. It will be his 17th cap since making his full international debut at the end of March 2004.
Spurs boss Martin Jol told Tottenham's official website: "It's very good news and Jermain deserved it. He knew his chance would come (again). He showed a good attitude and took it on the chin when he was left out of the World Cup squad. He has scored plenty of goals in pre-season in difficult matches against good opponents."
