Fresh defender setback

Gardner, who has been sidelined all summer as a result of knee ligament damage picked up in the final game of last season against Manchester United, turned in an impressive display at London Road last night before leaving the field with a hamstring injury.
Hoddle already has defenders Stephen Carr and Gary Doherty sidelined with long-term injury problems, while Goran Bunjevcevic is only just returning after a fractured cheekbone, and the Spurs boss will be hoping the injury to the highly-rated Gardner is not too serious.
The former Port Vale defender was playing the fifth game of his comeback and was withdrawn as a precautionary measure and will learn the full extent of the damage over the next couple of days.
"There was quite a bit of precaution in him coming off, so it's not as if it has snapped or anything like that.
"I don't know if it's a strain, a pull, or he's just overstretched, so we'll keep our fingers crossed on that," reserve team boss Colin Calderwood told the club's official website.
For the record Spurs ran-out 4-1 winners, with Oyvind Leonhardsen, Steve Ferguson, Yannick Kamanan and Matthew Etherington on target after Spurs had trailed to Daniel French's goal.
Etherington was made captain for the evening on his return to the club where he made his name and he capped an impressive performance with the fourth and final goal.
