Sheringham reached the milestone seven minutes from time in the 4-1 win over the Premiership strugglers, becoming only the second striker currently playing to achieve the feat, following Newcastle striker Alan Shearer.

"For him to get 300 goals is a fantastic milestone, but people should sit back and think, 300 goals is one helluva achievement, but how many goals has he made for other players in his career as well?" said Hoddle.

"Teddy has always had the ability to link play. I remember watching him when he was at Millwall playing alongside Tony Cascarino.

"I was training at Chelsea after leaving Monaco and Bobby Campbell sent me to watch another player.

"I told him I had not seen a better link-up man and striker than Teddy Sheringham - that was my first real glimpse of him when he was a young player."

"Teddy has got a love for the game. At international level he and Alan Shearer were a pleasure to work with and they were a partnership.

"They knew each other's game and they complemented each other's game."
