Hoddle: We weren't at our best

Spurs raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Ziege and Keane, but the Baggies came back into the game with 17 minutes remaining when a Scott Dobie effort brought the deficit to just one goal.

So, with the score at 2-1 Spurs needed a scrambled effort by Gus Poyet 10 minutes from time to make sure of the points.

Hoddle said: "We weren't at our best today at all and, you've got to be honest, I felt West Brom played very well and Gary Megson should be proud of the way they played,"

"We could have been quickly 2-1 down if West Brom had shown better finishing but full credit to them they came here with a different philosophy than in most of their away games.

"Maybe it was conceding the early goal, but they pushed up, worked hard and caused us problems.

"It was probably their undoing in the end because they were defending on the halfway line and that can be dangerous when you have somebody of Robbie Keane's pace.

"The good sign for us is that we haven't played particularly well and we won. We were never really secure, never playing well and if they'd have had their finishing boots on we might have found ourselves behind.

"It's an honest assessment and the lads know they haven't played well enough."
