Injuries darken aspirations of Europe

Jermain Defoe appeared to lose possession inside the Tottenham half, allowing Carter an opportunity to break through the middle and place a shot beyond Paul Robinson.

"When you look at their goal you know we have to concentrate for 90 minutes and not concede like that," said Spurs coach Martin Jol afterwards.

Jol had been forced to withdraw Reto Ziegler before the break, so Michael Brown was pushed wide out onto the right to allow Sean Davis to play alongside Michael Carrick in the centre of midfield. Andy Reid, who had started on the right swapped onto his more accustomed left side role.

Michael Brown (left) switched into Andy Reid's starting berth.
