Is Daniel Levy holding Tottneham Hotspur back

Last updated : 21 August 2015 By DSG

For Twenty years now Tottenham have finished below Arsenal, in fact Arsenal are the only Premiership team that Spurs haven't finished above

Looking at the bigger picture however, should Tottenham be aiming higher than that, or is the Premier League title just an impossible ambition for the North London side

One of the main criticisms of Tottenham Hotspur is their poor player recruitment, there's no question that Spurs have always had top class players, the likes of David GInola, Jimmy Greaves and Paul Gascoigne to name a few

In more recent years though top class players have come and gone such as Gareth Bale and Luka Modric without any real star quality replacement

Both were sold to Real Madrid with Bale sold for a hefty £85.3m and with the Bale money came seven new players all new to the premier league, a gamble that didn't pay off

When you sell a top quality player you need to replace him with a top quality player which Tottenham failed to do

Another contributor to their own downfall is a lack of stability in terms of management, now Seven managers in Ten years isn't all that surprising given the current climate with managers appearing to get sacked left right and centre

What's more concerning is the reasoning behind the sackings

It seems harsh for chairman Daniel Levy to sack a manager for not reaching the top Four, with the top sides in the Premier League only getting stronger it appears to be getting harder and harder for Spurs to reach that goal

Tottenham need the stability that Pochettino brings and it seems time that its the players, not the manager who have a point to prove

Coming into the 2015/16 season Mauricio Pochettino is confident in his side's ability "We want to be a good squad for in the next few years to fight for the top four and win the BPL one day".

Winning the Premier League is more of a dream than a potential reality for Tottenham Hotspur as things stand, they are a long way off the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea and only the right investment will help close that gap

There's no doubt that Tottenham have good quality in their squad

Hugo Lloris is arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the world but another season without Champions League football could see the Frenchman leave having already been linked with Paris St Germain and Manchester United

Another player linked to United is Harry Kane who at only 22 has huge potential and is labelled by fans 'one of their own'

Keeping hold of Kane will be crucial in how successful Spurs are increasingly so after flop Roberto Soldado was sold to Villarreal for less than a third of what he was signed for leaving Tottenham with only two first team strikers.

Daniel Levy needs to keep his faith in Manager Mauricio Pochettino as well as give him the funds to buy quality players but that business should have been done before the season begun leaving fans frustrated with Levy's strategy

With a new stadium on the horizon Tottenham fans will be eager for champions league football again after having a taste in 2010 but desperately need to bolster their squad to achieve it.
