Despite obvious concerns that players will return from internationals carrying fresh injuries, Martin Jol accepts that player's involvement across Europe is good for their personal development. The Spurs boss watched as Jermain Defoe struck two goals in an England shirt at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Jol said: "When England scored two goals I was waiting for him to join in and he has now proved he can score goals at international level. I was pleased for him and our other (England) players too."

"I also saw the Republic of Ireland game against Germany and they did themselves proud. Our players were playing all over the place and it was good for them."
