Jenas signs new contract

After the turmoil of the past few weeks Tottenham supporters would have been forgiven for fearing that some of the clubs star players would start to want out of the pantomime that is every day life at the club. Not so it seems, as the news that Jermaine Jenas has signed an extension to his contract to keep him at Spurs until 2012.

The midfielder, recently dropped by Steve McClaren from the England set up, has been impressive over the past two games despite a poor start to the season. It is no secret that he is a firm favourite of Martin Jol (and the boo boys) and so his long term commitment to the club suggests he is confident that Jol is not on the verge of being dismissed.

Jenas said on the clubs official website: "The spirit in the squad is terrific, the club is ambitious and undoubtedly moving forward.

I feel I still have a lot of potential to develop further and playing alongside team-mates of this quality will help me do that."

Jenas has long flattered to deceive since his move to White Hart Lane from the goldfish bowl that is life at Newcastle. That said, he is too often an unjust target for abuse from opposition fans who dismiss just how effective he can be on his day. "JJ has made a big contribution over the last two seasons and he is improving as a player all the time", said Martin Jol who would have been pleased to see one of his key players offer such a public statement of support. "I am delighted he has committed his future to the Club because JJ has so much talent and is such a positive player."

Meanwhile The Sun reported yesterday that Chelsea and Tottenham are discussing a possible swap deal involving Shaun Wright Phillips and Jermain Defoe, though this may well prove to be old gossip rehashed in the days leading to the closing of the transfer window.
