Jol plays his best hand yet

Maybe it was down to seeing a bit of good fortune when Ledley King’s goal went in off his knee. But the introduction of Teemu Tainio led to Mido’s equaliser, before Jermain Defoe set up Robbie Keane for a winner ten minutes from time, after the Irishman had come on for Jermaine Jenas.

"Sometimes you have to force your luck but you can always say in hindsight that you made the right substitutions," he said.

"Even at 2-1, I felt we could do something. Mido scored a great equaliser and we could then take a gamble or choose a settled system at the back, but Robbie was on the line and I thought we should go for the gamble. I think on the second half performance we deserved the win," Jol added.

The Dutchman was less impressed by the defending that allowed Charlton striker Darren Bent to score twice for the Addicks: "We didn't pressurise the ball a couple of times and they have speedy players, so if you want to play offside you have to do it with all four defenders. At this level, we gave away cheap goals."
