Jol refuses to point the finger

Neither of Jol’s front pairing has scored now in three games - although Jermaine Defoe had an effort chalked off for offside, wrongly as it turned out.

Defoe has also introduced a new element to his game of gathering the ball more from deeper positions this season, but it can’t have escaped Jol’s attention that six weeks have passed by without his England striker banging away one that counts.

"We had four or five chances - we hit the post, bar and had at least two half-chances - and should easily have got a point.

"However, we were a bit unfortunate because we made a good response after they went in front and overall I think we played a little better than them, especially in midfield.

"But I think we missed Aaron Lennon - you can always do with a bit of pace and brilliance down the flanks. I think we lacked that but, having said that, I think we deserved something but it wasn't our night.

"Everybody sees we have a good young team but we have to improve and do better by taking advantage more up front.

"It can be a bit awkward when you play against Bolton because they normally create a lot of chances because of their style. When you see them get crosses in they have four or five players in the box and we have to learn that and do it as well.

"We changed it a bit, played 4-3-3 for a little while with Teemu Tainio behind the strikers and Bolton had problems for about 25 minutes. They wanted to pressurise us but we were able to avoid the pressure because of that."
