The Dutchman admitted he is not a coach who sees value in consoling players who are not regularly featuring in matches.

While Aaron Lennon is very young, and Danny Murphy is just settling in at Spurs, the likes of Jermain Defoe who have been at the club for a fairly long period have it instilled in them, being on the bench is a challenge to get even better.

He said: "Sometimes I feel Jermain is so disappointed that every word from me would be a word too much."

"Jermain has never said to me ‘Gaffer, I have to play because I want to go to the World Cup’. Only Robbie Keane ever said that to me, at the beginning of the season. But a month later I asked him ‘What the heck are you on about? Ireland aren’t even going to the World Cup!’
