Jol's pedigree lauded by Fergie

The results at Old Trafford and Highbury where Manchester United and Arsenal were both held to draws on Tuesday night will have a huge significance on the outcome of the Premiership title this season.

Afterwards however all conversation was leaning towards the remarkable incident that occurred in the final minute between Manchester United and Spurs.

Neither referee Mark Clattenburg nor his assistant on the line Rob Lewis could verify that Pedro Mendes’ long distance shot clearly crossed United’s goal line by a full metre.

The strike from 50 yards out should have meant Tottenham that Tottenham could celebrate a rare victory at Old Trafford but instead Martin Jol’s side had to settle for a draw. The last time Spurs even won so much as a point at Old Trafford was in March 1995. The draw should go a long way to confirm Tottenham's aspirations of qualifying for a place in European competition next season is for real.

"I've told the players there's 16 tough Premiership games to go and we mustn't think about Europe at the moment," said Jol.

Alex Ferguson nearly gave the Spurs coach a job as his number two at United the season before last.

"Martin Jol was someone I was very interested in when I was looking for an assistant. He did a fantastic job in Holland. People there told me he was very aware tactically and when I spoke with him I was very impressed with what he had to say," said Sir Alex Ferguson

"I knew it wouldn't be long before I would be hearing about him again. He's done really well so far at Tottenham - it was obvious Frank Arnesen who knew all about him would take him in. Now as their manager you can see Spurs are developing very nicely," he added.
