José Mourinho has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur are conceding too many goals of late, and he has pinned the shortcomings on a lack of height in his defensive backline.
Spurs have struggled defensively since Mauricio Pochettino was sacked, shipping a whopping 17 goals during Mourinho's ten games in charge.
The north London club has kept only one clean sheet since their new boss arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the ex-Chelsea man explained that it's 'impossible' to defend without any height at the back, as reported by The Sun.
“We play so well, we create so much. In the beginning we were conceding lots of goals on corners, we stopped that.
“We conceded the other day against Brighton from a free-kick. But there are things in football that are very difficult to control.
“When I am small and you are taller than me by 15cm there are things in football that are impossible.
"The only solution is to select a majority of tall players to cope with the physicality of the Premier League or in European competitions.
“But we have to improve, we concede too many goals and it is very frustrating.”
Spurs edged to a nervy 2-1 victory over Brighton on Thursday afternoon, but the hosts initially fell behind through a towering Adam Webster header.
Mourinho was quick to praise his side's creativity in front of goal, along with their 'fantastic spirit', after goals from Harry Kane and Dele Alli completed the turnaround over the Seagulls.
“If I was one of my attackers I would be very frustrated that behind we are unable to stop it. But it is also great to know the team never gives up. I want to praise that fantastic spirit.
“People who accumulate 180 minutes in two games were fantastic. The others who are not playing too much or came back from injuries, like Erik Lamela and Tanguy Ndombele, deserve praise.”
Tottenham have improved dramatically under Mourinho, leaving themselves only five points behind Chelsea in the hunt for a top-four finish.
