"He has to improve his movement, to stay high up and make it difficult for the full-back which he will manage because he’s a very intelligent boy.

"He's very quick so if he's doing that, he's making us less predictable," said Jol.

The 18-year-old signed from Leeds United in the summer may still have been waiting for his first team introduction if Wayne Routledge hadn’t broken his foot in the opening week of the season.

"My chance has come a lot faster than expected. I looked at the squad and thought I would first have to play well in five or six reserve games," said Lennon.

"I think I’ve done fairly well and I have to keep training hard and stay in there," he added.

Anthony Gardner and Michael Carrick are both out of the London derby at home to Fulham tonight after picking up thigh and ankle injuries against Aston Villa and Grimsby respectively.

There will be fitness tests for Michael Dawson and Teemu Tainio (both hamstring) and Edgar Davids (groin) before kick-off.
