Over at Manchester City and Tottenham particularly, there was not a spare set of gloves to be had as players went to drastic measures to keep out the cold.

Ninja on the wing: Adam Johnson tries a new tactic to help bypass Bolton's defence when they meet

None more drastic than City's Adam Johnson who sacrificed his own sight to keep warm by covering himself from head to toe in clothing with no flesh spared.

In a football age where the snood is becoming more common, we're not too sure this is going to catch on given its immediate disadvantages.

This could be our new away kit: Tevez went to great lengths to keep warm

Fellow teammate Carlos Tevez also felt the chill but his attempts to keep warm at least gave him the ability to see where he was going.

Birmingham City would also have been amused after seeing the 'southern softies' exposed in Saturday's opponents Tottenham.

Feeling the chill: Luka Modric still looks unaccustomed to the British winter

Luka Modric and Peter Crouch were decked out in full winter Spurs gear which will have the club's merchandising department delighted at seeing their winter gear fully exposed in the run up to Christmas.

Back in the cold: Crouch has been in and out the Spurs side

Yet there was one renegade who saved the extra 10 minutes getting ready for training by braving the cold.

James Milner showed his colleagues around the country how it should to be done by opting for just a simple jumper to keep out the icy air, proving not all footballers have gone soft yet.

Who said it's cold? James Milner looks on, probably astonished by teammate Adam Johnsons attire

But once again the rugby lads put the football world to shame. In a bitterly cold and snow covered Royal Kensington Gardens, the South Africa rugby union team posed for a team photo with not so much as a pair of gloves in sight. You're a one man army I'm afraid James.

Spot the snood: South Africa's rugby union team hardly noticed the chilly temperatures in west London
