Mido New Year concern for Jol

But Martin Jol wants Egypt to release Mido so that the striker can face Manchester City on January 4 and Liverpool on January 14 — six days before Egypt’s opener in the African Nations Cup against Libya, reported The Sun.

Jol said: "I can’t stop him going but it is a problem. He could come back for certain games. We’ve spoken about it so it could be an option."

Jol has ruled out making a move for another (loan) striker to cover the absence of Mido, who has scored four goals this season, reported Gary Jacob in The Times.

"There are a few options but we will still miss him, especially if Egypt do well.”

Mido, 22, has been a permanent starter for Spurs this season apart from three games he was banned for after his red card against Chelsea.

Grzegorz Rasiak played in two of those, and the Pole netted his first goal for the club in the reserves' 3-0 victory against Portsmouth on Tuesday night.

Rasiak watched by Jol from the sidelines, opened his account for Clive Allen's men but Lee Barnard grabbed the goalscoring headlines again with another double to settle it by half-time at Havant & Waterlooville. He has scored six goals in his last three reserves games - all doubles - and 10 in 11 games in the FA Premier Reserve League South this season.

Allen said: "Lee keeps scoring goals and keeps getting into scoring positions time and time again. He is full of confidence at the moment and is improving all the time, not just with his goalscoring, but with his all-round play. I think he enjoyed playing with Grzegorz Rasiak, it gave him license to get into other positions and I thought the two played well together and had numerous chances. He is working as hard as ever and is honing his skills all the time. He is looking to improve, he wants to score more and more goals and is very hungry."

Before former Tottenham striker Allen took over the reserves Barney had operated as a second striker linking up play between midfield and attack . His goals return at that time suffered as a result.

"Very early when I came back we talked about it and he took it on board that if I can help him in any way I try to. His goals are down to the way he has worked to improve his game," he added.
