More goals the key to Spurs transition

"We want to be a top six club and I think we can do that. But we are still looking for perfect balance," he added in the Mail.

"We have more experience in our side now than last season when we were not good enough to compete for the top spots in the league. If you have that sort of transition, you call it strength in depth and I call it too many players. We have a lot of players in central midfield and central defence, but not other departments. We need some time and we are still not the finished article. If we don’t develop our scoring record (from midfield), we can’t achieve anything and that is what I have to put in their minds.

Jol continued in the Telegraph: "My midfield is very young and don't have a proven record in front of goal. If we don't develop our goalscoring record we cannot achieve anything, and that is what I have to put in their mind. Jenas scored against United and hopefully he can score six or seven goals this season. He must realise that if he is not doing that, he could have a problem."

"Chelsea are 100% in every department and that's what we are trying to achieve.

"The only thing we have to improve is in the final third of the pitch. We are still looking for players with balance. There are four areas of football and if you are almost 100% technically, tactically, physically and mentally then you are like Chelsea.

"If you see all our statistics, we are in the top four or five. The evidence lies in the fact that we've only lost to Chelsea at home in the league this season but I think Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are a bit better than we are. They have more experience and they are a bit older.

"If these teams go for a player, they don't go for someone like Aaron Lennon or Michael Carrick. But when teams like Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United would like our players, we are doing well. That wasn’t the case last year but I think we have four or five players now, so everything is going the way I want."
