The 35-year-old was unable to face Newcastle United last Sunday after aggravating the recurring problem at Birmingham City eight days earlier. Meanwhile, Michael Brown’s foot injury sustained in the 1-0 win against Graeme Souness’ side has proven to be less serious than anticipated.

Hopes remain high Brown will return before end of season.

The attacking midfielder may be out of action for as little as two weeks after he was diagnosed with a small hairline fracture. "He is suspended for two games after Liverpool and we hope he will be back for our last two or three games," said Martin Jol.
