Poll deceived by Russian's roll

Chelsea took advantage when midfielder Alexei Smertin deliberately tumbled to the ground in the closing stages of the first half.

Ledley King's attempt to prove his innocence proved fruitless as referee Graham Poll awarded the visitors a penalty.

Despite Paul Robinson correctly guessing which way England colleague Frank Lampard would plant his shot, the stalemate was finally broken, after nearly 130 minutes of football between the two sides this season,

"I thought Smertin was stamping on his own feet and fell over so the penalty was a goal out of nothing - television replays proved that, but it was difficult to see from the referee's angle," said a diplomatic Jol afterwards."

"Ledley was upset, Smertin stood on him rather than Ledley doing anything," added Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick.
