Glenn Hoddle brought the Uruguayan to White Hart Lane for a bargain £1.5million, and Poyet has been a great success netting six goals for The Lillywhites and proving an inspiration in the middle of the park.
The veteran schemer missed the Premiership clash at White Hart Lane, but was made captain for last night's trip to Stamford Bridge as Spurs lost out 2-1 in the first leg of the Worthington Cup semi-final.
"The reception from the fans was great and there was no problem. It was a tough game and I think we played very well with the ball but Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was the difference," he said.
"I don't think Chelsea played better than us. We didn't create too many opportunities but Jimmy was outstanding again. It's a different Chelsea with a different kind of football.
"We are not happy because we lost but we still have a great chance. It's not over, it's half-time and we're 2-1 down.
"With Teddy Sheringham we'll have a chance to win because 1-0 and we are through so we have to keep Jimmy quiet up front."
Poyet was also quick to point out that he is relishing life at Spurs and is eager to help the club progress.
"I am enjoying it, playing regularly and enjoying my football. We are trying to improve and edge into the Worthington Cup final and trying to get into Europe as soon as possible," he added.
