Gus Poyet has decided that this is to be his last season as a player. The Uruguyan has made the decision to hang up his playing boots, but wants to continue in the game as a coach. Poyet, who scored Spurs' second goal against Everton at the weekend joined the club from West London rivals Chelsea in June 2001 and has only one year left on his contract. He told BBC World Football 'I don't want to go down a division and I don't want to go to Portugal or Spain'. Many Spurs fans were surprised that Glenn Hoddle decided to keep him during the summer clearout, but recent performances have highlighted his worth.

Poyet missed the start of the season with a broken wrist, but came back in the three-nil victory over Coventry in the Carling Cup and has completed both league games since then. He is famed for his late arrivals in the penalty area and has scored some wonder goals throughout his career, his best for Spurs, a volley against Birmingham last season. He will live long in the memory of Spurs fans after his late equaliser against Arsenal in the 2001-2002 season.
