The 22-year-old Cameroon international was booed by some sections of the home supporters after his poor performance in the 1-1 draw with Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

"Atouba takes a lot of risks. One day you love him - today was different, but he will learn," said Spurs coach Martin Jol.

Young right back Stephen Kelly was also criticised by Jol. The Irish youngster broke into the team only this month in place of Noe Pamarot. The French defender became unsettled amid speculation the club were preparing to sell him for £2m to Southampton after just five months at the club, but no deal was eventually agreed.

"Every spot in the team is up for competition. You really have to be on your toes because one bad game and you could be out of the team," said Kelly.

Meanwhile, Jacques Santini revealed to the French media that the sale of ex-Spurs captain and right back Stephen Carr to Newcastle United was done without his consent and set the tone for his brief reign as head coach this season.
