Quakers pray for Gazza deal

Darlington chairman George Reynolds is set to make an audacious bid to bring Paul Gascoigne back to English football, and back to the North-East. Reynolds, who famously failed in his bid to bring Colombian Faustino Asprilla to the third division is hoping that Gazza is the man to bring the good times to Darlington, and also the fans into the stadium. The Quakers have had a poor start to the season, lying seventeenth in Division Three and were thumped 4-0 at home to Bristol Rovers on Saturday , but what is more worrying for Reynolds is that their 27,500 capacity stadium is struggling to be even half full on matchday. Only 4,268 saw the defeat at the weekend.

With Gascoigne still hot property due to the his ability to draw in the crowds, any move for the former Spurs and England star will not be without its difficulties, and the players agent has already expressed frustration at the way Darlington have released the story so early in the negotiations. A statement from Gascoigne's representatives, Grass Roots Managament said, 'We have spoken to George Reynolds and we had been promised it would not be made public'. Darlington are not the only side interested in the midfielder's signature, with other English clubs and a number of sides in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates attempting to capture the star.
