Richards calls time on career

Richards, who has been unable to break into the first team during his fourth season at the club, was advised to quit the game for the benefit of his personal health.

"I am obviously deeply disappointed to be giving up the sport I love, but have discussed the results with my family and my representatives and it is the only choice," said Richards.

"Dean has undergone extensive tests over the past few months which have produced strong, conclusive medical evidence that it would be harmful to his long-term health to continue the sport," said a statement on the club's official website.

Richard’s long absence was blamed on an ear infection resulting in loss of balance, dizzy spells and headaches. He was fortunately given the all clear following a brain scan in November.

Frank Arnesen’s personal tribute to Richards will echo the sentiments of the club’s supporters: "It is always a sad day when you lose a good player from the game. He had some fine moments for Spurs and we all wish him well in the future," he said.
