Roberto Martinez in talks with Tottenham over managerial vacancy

Tottenham are in talks with Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez as they continue their search for a new manager.

Ryan Mason has been in interim charge of Spurs since Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties just days before the club faced Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

Chairman Daniel Levy previously expressed his desire to appoint a new boss before the end of the Premier League season, though it soon became clear this wouldn't be possible as they suffered a number of setbacks in their search.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was the first to rule himself out of the running for the post, with Erik Ten Hag extending his stay with Ajax shortly after being linked with a move to north London.

The news Nuno Espirito Santo would be leaving Wolves at the end of the season led many to speculate he could be the new man through the door at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, Sky Sports now report Martinez is in talks to take over at the club.

The former Everton boss has guided Belgium to top spot in the FIFA world ranking since being appointed as manager in August 2016, though he's understood to have told friends he's looking forward to returning to club management following this summer's delayed Euro 2020 finals.

Martinez hasn't managed at club level for over five years now, having left Everton following a disappointing 11th place finish in 2015/16.

Prior to his Goodison Park stay he also spent time in England's top flight with Wigan where he secured the club's maiden FA Cup triumph after their incredible 1-0 win over Manchester City in the 2013 edition of the competition.

His only managerial role before his time with Wigan saw him guide Swansea from League One back to the Championship before leaving in 2009.
