There are times when Daniel Levy reads his own press clippings about being the transfer genius. However, after the season-ending blow losing first choice midfielder Sandro to a knee injury; this is not one of those times when Levy should be at his most stubborn. The team is in good form right now and it is riding a wave positive energy. This injury could be a serious blow in their climb to Champions League football if Sandro is not replaced.
So for Spurs? fans mindset let?s hope that the words coming from Andre Villas-Boas about not wanting a replacement is just a smoke screen.
So what are realistic options for replacement for the ?Player? as Andre Villas-Boas calls everyone. They are trying to move up the summer signing Lewis Holtby from Schalke and Levy is trying to low ball the German club and they are rebuffing Tottenham advancements. Rumors are swirling in all papers that the team is trying to steal M?Vlla, French Midfielder from Rennes, out from under former boss Harry Redknapp?s nose as a potential replacement for their injured midfielder.
Both of those players are good players but neither one give the team what they are lacking. The team is lacking that creative linking player that they had with Luka Modric. Levy stubborn negotiations in the summer made it difficult to replace Modric because of the late time frame of when the deal was completed.
AVB desperately wants to set the team up in a 4-2-3-1 but he is lacking that player that can link the back with the attacking players up front. The Spurs have two options in players that fit exactly what AVB needs to continue his revolution in North London. They could have been the Dutchman Wesley Sneijder (Had he not signed for Galatasaray), who desperately wants to get out of Inter and Moutinho from Porto, who the team almost had signed in the summer. Schneider hang up will be his wages as he commands 200K a week which would blow the wage scale, how bad does he want to get out of Inter would be willing to reduce his demands to push a transfer to North London. Moutinho hang up is not his wages but the transfer fee that Porto is asking for during this window. Levy has stated that it should be discounted from the price they agreed in the summer and the Portuguese club is standing firm right now.
Both of those players give them that spark and the creativity needed to get the Spurs engine going in the right direction. What it will also do is signal to the rest of the English Premier League is that this team is not going to fold up as they did last season. They are pressing forward and are looking at the teams at the top of the table not behind them.
So if the club can bring in one of those players during this window then you almost guarantee a top four finish this year. In the end you hope that Levy does not over play his hand trying to get the players at the ?BEST? price available that the investment today will be made up in the revenues generated with Champions League football.
