Sherwood wants to stay at Spurs

Sherwood has not featured in Spurs' first team squad this season because of a knee ligament injury and at the start of the campaign came out with a public outburst in which he criticised Hoddle's management style and the club's lack of ambition.

However, Sherwood is fit again and has urged Hoddle to name him in the Spurs squad for the north London derby at Arsenal on Saturday.

"I've been injured for 14 weeks and that is the longest period I've been out in my career," Sherwood told the Evening Standard.

"But I came through Monday night's reserve game with no effects to my knee and I believe I am fit enough to play against Arsenal if required.

"The Spurs medical team get a lot of criticism for the number of injuries at the club but I have to give them credit for nursing me through this.

"Every player wants to play in a north London derby and I am no different. It is a game I used to dream about playing in as a kid. I am a Spurs fan as well so I know what it means to them to win.

"I want to play against Arsenal and think I could do a job but if I'm not selected then there is another reserve game on Monday night against Charlton after which I'll definitely be ready for Leeds next weekend. It is down to the manager but I believe I'm fit enough now."

The 33-year-old midfielder's contract runs out at the end of this season and he has been strongly linked with a move to Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth, but Sherwood now wants to stay at White Hart Lane and prove he's worth an extension on his current deal.

"My contract runs out in June but I am just focused on getting back into the first team. I am committed to giving 100% to the club until the very last moment of my time here and want the chance to prove that.

"I now want to stay at the club and show the manager that I am good enough to earn an extension to my contract."
