Son Heung-min set to sign new long-term Tottenham contract

Son Heung-min is close to signing a new long-term contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

Son is one of Spurs' most important players and he enjoyed a fruitful 2020/21 season. In what was his most prolific campaign to date, he managed 17 goals and 10 assists in 37 games, continuing his fruitful partnership with Harry Kane and earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Year.

Despite the pair's impressive form, Tottenham again missed out on Champions League football. Courtesy of their seventh place finish, they will instead compete in the inaugural Europa Conference League.

With Spurs stuttering as a club on all levels, Son has been linked with a move away from north London. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the South Korean is close to penning fresh terms. Negotiations began all the way back in December and a new long-term contract should be confirmed soon with all parties confident that an agreement can be reached.

The news is a big boost for Tottenham fans who have endured a rocky few months. Back in April, Jose Mourinho was dismissed as head coach, days before they lost the Carabao Cup final with interim boss Ryan Mason at the helm.

Mason handed back the reigns at the end of last season and despite being linked with Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino and a host of other big names, they now look set to appoint departing Roma boss Paulo Fonseca as their next head coach.

This is not the only question mark that hangs over the club. The future of Kane remains uncertain. The striker has told Spurs that he wishes to the leave the club with Manchester City and Chelsea both interested.

Kane - who finished last season top of the Premier League goal and assist charts - has three years left on his contract, and Spurs are certainly not under any obligation to sell this summer.
