Spurs admire their classy opponents

Assistant Spurs coach Chris Hughton was at the club when Peter Crouch worked his way through the ranks at youth level.

He said: "We were aware he had potential but at the time, we felt we might have to wait for it, which has been the case.

"A lot of his progress was down to his own work and determination. He went from us to QPR (in July 2000) where he was able to quicken up his progress because it was somewhere he was going to feature more regularly. He did well there, went to Portsmouth and then had the big move to Villa.

"That didn't go so well but then he went to Southampton where he picked up again and he's gone from strength to strength at Liverpool. Crouchy's enjoyed a fine 2006.

"He's had the desire to want to do well and it's been proved by the progress he's made."

"Liverpool changed their shape against Blackburn on Boxing Day when they went with three centre-halves - Daniel Agger, a young player they rate very highly, Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher. The two wide players were Jon-Arne Riise and Steve Finnan. In midfield Steven Gerrard has played a more central role. On the bench at Ewood Park, there's Dirk Kuyt, a player who has been an instant hit in the Premiership.

"They've been in good form, creating a lot of chances and before Blackburn, scoring a lot of goals as well.

Tom Huddlestone said: "Steven Gerrard has gone from strength to strength and Xabi Alonso was a player I enjoyed watching when he was at Real Sociedad."

Hossam Ghaly said: "I played with Dirk Kuyt for almost three years (at Feyenoord). He always gave 100 per cent whether it's in training or on matchday."
